Sunday at the SF City: Match-of-the-day Video Highlights

Daniel Connolly takes 23 holes to edge Bryan Baumgarten in what Steve Lewis of the Tournament Committee called "a slugfest of birdies and eagles"

On Sunday at the San Francisco City Championship, one match took the longest. 23 holes to be exact. That match was between two high school seniors heading off in the fall to play Division I collegiate golf.

Daniel Connolly will play at SMU, while Bryan Baumgarten is going to Illinois (currently ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek/College Golf Coaches poll).

Baumgarten -- a semifinalist last year -- had a stretch of seven birdies in nine holes which put him 2-up with three to play.

Connolly, an upcoming SMU Mustang, battled back and forced extra holes. Amazingly, the high school seniors halved the first three playoff holes with birdies, with Connolly eventually pulling the match out on the fifth playoff hole.

Steve Lewis, of the San Francisco City Championship committee, said of the match:

"It was a slugfest of birdies and eagles. Connolly missed a ten footer on the fourth extra hole to let the match go to the next where he was able to get it up and down from greenside for birdie after two powerful shots."
