Sun Country (SCAGA) Couples

Couple's Championship Holds Tradition, Enjoyment/Delgadillo's Earn Third Straight Title

RUIDOSO, NM (October 3, 2005) -- Congratulations to Javier and Jennifer Delgadillo of Emerald Springs GC for earning their third straight title in the gross division. The pair earned the 2003-2004 titles at Sonoma Ranch. The Delgadillo’s carded a two-day total of 3-under par, shooting a 75 Saturday in alternate shot, followed by a 6-under par 66 Sunday in Four-Ball competition. Earning the net division title were Eddie Sanchez and Barbara Schmitt of Los Alamos GC. They carded net rounds of 70 Saturday and 56 Sunday for a 126 total. Since the early 1990s, one event on the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association schedule has stood out. Not in the sense of competition, but in the sense of camaraderie. When the SCAGA Couple Championship was initiated, many thought the term "Divorce Open" would be more appropriate. After all, a "contract" was established indicating that each participant must not become upset with his or her partner. In essence the end result of the event should not end a relationship. The SCAGA has erased those theories of days gone-by. The event is strictly a "Couples Championship" and will remain so. This event is relaxed competition. Participants enjoy 36-holes of golf over two days, enjoy social activities and meet up with old friends. The reason Sun Country members come out and support the event is the unique style and format, allowing couples of any ability the chance to succeed. During Saturday's play, alternate shot was used. Sunday's final round was four-ball, in which the low score per hole among team members is used to determine total score. If that isn't unique enough, both net and gross divisions are included. During the first round, 50% of handicap for the men and 50% of handicap for the women are used to calculate net score. In Sunday's four-ball format, 90% of the men's handicap and 95% of the ladies' handicap is utilized. In essence everyone competes on equal ground, which allows everyone to concentrate on the main objective - having fun! Any successful event is as good as the venue and its participants. The Links in Ruidoso was in tremendous condition and the SCAGA hopes to continue its strong relationship with the Links. For two years, the event was held at Sonoma Ranch GC in Las Cruces. The SCAGA is fortunate to work with facilities that welcome these events. To boot, because of the excellent weather in the southern areas of the region, the time of year has been a perfect way to continue the October season.
