Stanford distances itself from field on Day 2 of The Goodwin

The Cardinal are playing for their first win of the season in their 27-team home event

Stanford managed to put some distance between itself and the next-best team Friday in the second round of its home event, the Goodwin. The Cardinal, at 2 under for 36 holes, tops the 27-team leaderboard.

Playing on its own Stanford Golf Course, a par 70, Stanford put up a second consecutive 1-under 279 on Friday. Henry Shimp and Brandon Wu were the low Cardinal scorers, with rounds of 68 and 69, respectively.

Stanford started the day trailing Washington by a shot, but handily outpaced the Huskies by 12 shots.

"Excited about our chances tomorrow," said Stanford head coach Conrad Ray. "A great opportunity to build on our spring campaign and gain experience against high quality teams. The goal is stay aggressive and play how we know we can. The results will take care of themselves."

If Stanford could pull it off, it would be the first win of the season for the Cardinal.

USC is the next-closest team with a 5-over total. The Trojans matched Stanford’s 1-under 279 on Friday.

Cal is another shot behind at 6 over followed by Oklahoma in fourth and Washington in fifth.

USC’s Kaito Onishi is the individual leader at 5-under 135. His second-round 66 bumped him six spots up the leaderboard. Cal’s Collin Morikawa is right behind him at 3 under.
