SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (June 5, 2014) -- Zachary Wright of LSU fired a 5-under 65 Thursday to rise out of a flock near the top of the leaderboard to take a three-shot lead at the 99th Southwestern Amateur at Desert Mountain.
Playing the Cochise Course, Wright's 65 kept pace with Kevin DeHuff of Pepperdine, who fired the low round of the day -- a 6-under 64 -- to forge a second-place tied alongside Matt Williams, who was one of four players that shared the lead after Wednesday's Round 1.
Wright's second round included an ace on the 189-yard 11th.
Williams, of Canada, carded a 68 to stay near the top of the leaderboard.
Fellow Canadian Tony Gil shot 69 and is now tied with David Snyder of the University of Kentucky.
Talented senior and mid-am competitor Brady Exber is tied for senveth after rounds of 67-70.
