ORLANDO, Fla. (July 17, 2008)--Florida Gator junior Tyson Alexander shot 7-under-par 65 to join an international foursome atop the 102nd Southern Amateur in the incomplete second round at Lake Nona Club.
A second day of weather delays will force nearly half the field to complete their second round early Friday morning before the field is cut for the final 36 holes.
Alexander, son of the UF golf coach, carded eight birdies and one bogey to complete two rounds at 8-under-par 136.
He is joined at that number by new Florida State Am champ Jude Eustaquio, a native Philippino now living in Lake Worth, Aussie amateur star Matt Jager who carded an ace in his first round and birdied the first three holes on each side Thursday and Georgia Tech senior Taylor Hall from LaGrange GA, who missed a chance to become the sole overnight leader when his 8-foot eagle putt barely missed at his final hole.
First-round leaders Hudson Swafford, Tim McKenney and Tim Schaetzel, all at 7-under par through the first round, had barely started their second round before Thursday’s play was suspended.
The tournament is scheduled to end Saturday with the winner earning an exempt spot to play in the PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Invitational next spring in Orlando.
