Southeastern Am: Beck leads

Jimmy Beck followed his first-round 65 with a 72 on Thursday and leads by 2 entering the final round

COLUMBUS, Georgia (June 13, 2013) -- While much of the east coast was under wet weather, the field at the Southeastern Amateur managed to get through its second round. Kennesaw State's Jimmy Beck followed his opening-round 65 with an even par 72 Thursday for a two-shot lead heading into Friday's final round at Country Club of Columbus. Beck's opening 65 gave him a three-shot lead over the field and he managed to withstand a slew of low Thursday rounds to remain the leader. Cates Culpepper, Adam Schenk and Brian Carter are all two shots back and tied for second plate at 3-under. Culpepper and Schenk, of Purdue, compiled identical rounds in each of the first two rounds (68-71). Carter, an incoming senior at Georgia, followed up his first-round 71 with a 68 on Thursday to get into contention. The Southeastern Amateur is an annual competition at the Donald Ross-designed Country Club of Columbus, a par-71, 6,398 track. The field consists of some of the best up-and-coming golfers on the college scene and many collegiate golfers from the southeastern U.S.
