SMU, UAB crowned co-champions at The Goodwin

Southern Methodist went 10-under on Saturday to tie for first place with second-round leaders University of Alabama-Birmingham

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Goodwin Intercollegiate tournament ended in a tie on Saturday as Southern Methodist and University of Alabama-Birmingham finished deadlocked at the top of the leaderboard at 23-under par. SMU, trailing the second-round leaders UAB by eight shots entering the final round, went 10-under on Saturday to climb up the leaderboard. The Mustangs were led by junior Austin Smotherman's 62, who used his final-round masterpiece to finish fifth. Another junior, Bryson DeChambeau, paced the team with a third-place finish, including a 65 in the final round. UAB featured the runner-up finisher, junior Will Cannon, who used a 62 of his own to break 200 over the 54-hole event. Cannon tied with Stanford's Maverick McNealy at 197, but by an NCAA rules tie-break, the Cardinal sophomore was granted the individual title. It was McNealy's second win of the spring as the Portola Valley, Calif. native posted 67-64-66 in his team's host tournament. He led Stanford to a third-place finish, six shots back of the co-champions.
