San Francisco City Update: All Final Matches Set

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 17, 2018) - 34-year-old Jason Anthony of Fairfield will take on high school senior Max Ting of Atherton in the San Francisco City Championship match play final.

Each player won two matches on Saturday to advance to the final match, to be played at TPC Harding Park on Sunday morning. Anthony edged Brendan Hy in the morning, 1 up, before taking out Tommy Semereaux 3&2 in the afternoon. Ting defeated Brett Viboch 2&1 and then scored a 2 up win over Caleb Shetler 2&1.

Ting won each of his five matches as the lower seed, and he'll be the lower seed in the final as well. Anthony qualified as the #3 seed, with Ting seeded #52. But as Ting has shown, seeds don't mean much in an 18-hole match.

Anthony has plenty of match play experience, making it to the quarterfinals in last year's City and making the second round of the U.S. Mid-Amateur last year. Ting too is on a match play roll, having won 7 of his last 8 matches in the City.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

2016 Senior City champion Randy Haag of Orinda will go for his second win in three years on Sunday, when he faces Scott Anderson of Danville.

Both players should be fresh for the final match. Haag only played 13 holes in a 6&5 win over Corey West on Saturday, while Anderson only played 12 holes in a 7&6 win over James Camaione.

Haag, who won the regular City Championship in 1999, has yet to be taken to the 17th hole in any of his matches so far.

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP

In the Women's Championship, 17-year-old Simar Singh of Los Altos will play 20-year-old Aman Sangha of San Mateo in the final match on Sunday morning.

Singh beat Sabrina Iqbal in her morning match, 2&1, before taking out Madelyn Gamble in the afternoon, 3&2.

Sangha, currently a sophomore at Cañada College who will play at Portland State University next year, won her morning match 4&3 over Elizabeth Scholtes, and then beat Arrielle Swan 2&1 in the afternoon.

SUPER SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

2011 Senior City champion Mark Miller of Brentwood will be looking to add a Super Senior title on Sunday, when he takes on Mike Parnow of Sonoma.

Each player defeated a former SF City champion on Saturday to advance to the final match. Miller beat the 2010 Senior City champion Herb Jensen 3&2, while Parnow took out the two-time (2013, 2017) and defending champion Ron Johnson.

OPEN FLIGHTS

12-year-old Jackson Koivun of San Jose defeated 52-year-old Tony Ralph of Sunnyvale, 1 up, to advance to the final of the Ken Venturi bracket. He will face 21-year-old Tyler Burnes of Bakersfield in the final, after Burnes scored a convincing 6&5 win over Alex Woodward of Oakland.

In the George Archer bracket, Jim Floresca beat Jonathan Gould 1 up to advance to the final to play Matthew Fegley, who beat Kelly Cooper 6&5.

In the Mayor Ed Lee bracket, it will be Abi Vickram versus Tom Ebergen in the final match. Both scored big wins on Saturday--Vickram 8&7 over Dino Siotos, and Ebergen 6&5 over William Olinger.

Brad Payne will face Matt Strube in the final of the Sandy Tatum bracket. Payne beat Chistopher Chin 3&1 on Saturday, while Strube defeated William Wei 6&5.

In the Ray Pellegrini Flight bracket, it will be Robert Cox against Naputt Aroonchaipirom in the final. Cox won 4&2 over Vinny Moran on Saturday, while Aroonchaipirom edged Michael Lopez 1 up.
