Sam Horsfield holds New Year's lead

Horsfield followed his 2nd-round 65 with a Saturday 71 and sits one shot ahead of Purdue's Philippe Schweizer

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Jan. 11, 2014) -- Florida teen Sam Horsfield shot a 71 Saturday to hold on to the lead at the 2014 New Years Invitational. The junior, who shot 60 at the Orlando City Amateur this year in addition to winning the Florida State Amateur in record fashion remains one shot ahead of Purdue's Philippe Schweizer entering Sunday's final round at St. Petersburg Country Club. Schweizzer shot his third straight round in the 60s, putting forth a Saturday 69 to climb from three back of Horsfield to force what should no doubt be an interesting final-round battle between the two. Mercer University's Hans Reimers sits third, four back of Horsfield while UNC's Michael McGowan slipped back to fourth place with a third-round 74. Indiana's Adam Schenk, who plays at Purdue, sits fifth after a third-round 70. Held every year since 1927, the New Year's Invitational is the region's oldest continuously-running invitational. Past winners include Peter Uihlein, Brandon Hagy, Jeff Overton and Brandt Snedeker.
