HUTCHINSON, Kansas (May 23, 2014) -- Weather conditions halted opening round play today at the NCAA Division I Championship so many times it had more than one coach afraid to even speculate what the rest of the week's schedule will look like.
Fifteen teams in the afternoon wave of tee times never even made it onto the first tee of Prairie Dunes Country Club Friday. A total of eight hours and 10 minutes of delays were endured before play was finally suspended at 5:50 p.m. CT.
“I’ve been doing this a long time and never remember a day like this where there were so many weather delays,” said California head coach Steve Desimone. “In the second wave we never had a chance to even get to the driving range to warm up.”
All 15 teams in the morning wave were able to get started but none had their entire teams finish nine holes.
When play was finally called off for the day Oregon (3-under) was shown at the top of the leaderboard on the heals of individual Zach Foushee, who was 3-under through six holes after recording birdies on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th holes and no bogeys.
Play will resume at 7:00am on Saturday in a shotgun start.
