Robin Dawson medals at Argentine Amateur

In a shortened 27-hole qualifying section, Robin Dawson of Ireland grabbed the No. 1 seed heading to match play in Argentina

CABA, Argentina — In a shortened 27-hole qualifying section, Robin Dawson of Ireland grabbed the No. 1 seed heading to match play at the Argentine Amateur Championship. He fired 64 on Wednesday to inch ahead of one of four first-round leaders Eric Banks of Canada and Cameron John of Australia. Players got in just nine holes each during the first day of stroke play qualifying as weather delayed play. Because of this, the originally scheduled 36-hole stroke play qualifying portion of the event was shortened to just 27 holes. Banks and John, along with Argentinians Lisandro Eyherabide and Gaston Romero, led through nine holes at 2-under par 32. The cut to reach match play, which will house the top-32 golfers, came at 3-over par 107. An even 32 players were at 3-over or better, so no playoff was needed to determine the final spots. Match play will begin Thursday at Tortugas Country Club in Caba, Argentina. Nineteen of the 32 players left are native to Argentina.
