Rahm, Iowa State Lead ASU Thunderbird invitational

TEMPE, Az. (April 2, 2016) -- The Thunderbird Invite began with 36 holes Saturday in a field that features three teams ranked in the nation’s top-20 according to Golfweek’s latest poll (No. 15 Arizona State, No. 19 California, No. 20 San Diego State). Not mentioned in that list are the underrated Iowa State Cyclones who lead the field after day one. The Cyclones are coming off a win at the Desert Shootout in which they shattered the previous tournament record by 15 shots. Continuing their good play, Iowa State fired rounds of 274 (10-under) and 276 (8-under) to lead host Arizona State by one shot. Iowa State was lead by sophomore who Denzel Ieremia opened with rounds of 64 (7-under) and 68 (3-under) to sit in solo second place. Junior Nick Voke also played very well, firing back-to-back 68s to tie for 6th place. The Cyclones will lean on these two tomorrow as four teams are within four shots of the lead including Cal Berkeley (third) and San Diego State (fourth). Leading the way individually is Arizona State's John Rahm after rounds of 66, 64. Rahm only recorded one bogey on his day to go along with 13 birdies. The Golfweek/amateurgolf.com number five ranked player in the world has recorded four-straight top-10's and looks to capture his 2nd victory of the 2015-16 season.
