Quarterfinals set at Argentine Amateur

All native Argentinians were knocked out during the first two rounds at Tortugas Country Club as only eight players are left standing

CABA, Argentina — Medalist Robin Dawson lost during the round-of-16 on Thursday at the Argentine Amateur Championship. The native of Ireland, who earned the top seed during a shortened 27 holes of stroke play qualifying, fell Thursday afternoon to Anthony Quayle of Australia by a count of 2-and-1. Players got in just nine holes each during the first day of stroke play qualifying as weather delayed play. Because of this, the originally scheduled 36-hole stroke play qualifying portion of the event was shortened to just 27 holes. The cut to reach match play, which housed the top-32 golfers, came at 3-over par 107. An even 32 players were at 3-over or better, so no playoff was needed to determine the final spots. The eight left standing at Tortugas Country Club do not include any of the 19 native Argentinians who qualified for match play. Six made it past the first round, but were not able to reach Friday's quarterfinals. The highest seed remaining is Australia's Cameron John, followed by Canada's Eric Banks, who is fresh off helping his home nation defend their Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup title. Also still alive in South America are former Tulsa University golfer Andre Tourinho, Italy's Luca Cianchetti, Ireland's Geoff Lenehan, Mexico's Eduardo Serratos, and Portugal's Joao Maria Neves.
