PLUMAS LAKE, CALIFORNIA (May 7, 2006) - 2006 NCGA Points leader Bob Niger did
his best imitation Tom Watson on Sunday, chipping in on the 17th green at Plumas
Lake Golf Club to open up a 2 stroke lead over Chris Johnson at the Plumas Lake
Amateur.
It couldn't have come at a better time, as Niger's two stroke lead was in serious
danger with Chris Johnson of Rancho Cordova nestled just 5 feet from the hole
for birdie (a putt he would hole after Niger's chip-in). When both players
hit the green in regulation at No. 18, Johnson gave himself a chance by holing
his birdie putt, but Niger responded with a calm two-putt to finish ahead by
one at 6-under par.
Johnson and Niger distanced themselves from the field on Sunday with under-par
rounds at Plumas Lake Golf Club, a well-liked 6400 yard layout in Marysville,
North of Sacramento. They had entered the day tied with Ben Hunter at 1-under
par, with Jusin Estrada and Sam Howard of nearby Yuba City just a stroke back
at even par.
Niger leads the NCGA Points race over recent Alameda Commuters champ Rick Reinsberg,
with the major events of the season ahead.
