Peter Kim wins New York Metropolitan Amateur

Peter Kim was 2-down to Ryan Snouffer after the first nine holes but slowly fought and eventually wound up with a slim 1-up win

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Peter Kim and Ryan Snouffer went all 36 holes during Sunday's championship match at the 113th Metropolitan Amateur, played in 2015 at the renowned Upper Course at Baltusrol Golf Club. After being 2-down through the first nine holes, Kim grinded his way to a 3-up lead with seven holes to play. Snouffer fought back, pushing the match all the way until the 36th hole as both players made matching pars to give Kim a slim 1-up victory. “It was a real battle out there, he was a phenomenal player, and to be able to be able to play well enough to make it, it’s such an honor,” Kim said of his final opponent, Stouffer. Kim, a junior at Army from Metuchen, N.J., made six birdies and an eagle during his 36 holes on Sunday, including two in a crucial stretch on holes 10-12 during the morning round. Winning three holes in a row, Kim quickly went from being 2-down to 1-up on Snouffer. Snouffer, a senior at Seton Hall, made two birdies on the front nine to get his 2-up lead, but never led again after Kim's back-nine run. Kim's route to the final was arduous, considering he needed seven playoff holes after stroke play qualifying to secure the 16th and final seed. He then knocked off medalist Luke Feehan 6-and-5 in the first round, and things just kept rolling from there. The win for Kim sends him to the 100th playing of the Metropolitan Open later this month, which is being played in its centennial year at Winged Foot.
