AIKEN, SC (June 6, 2009)--Entering the final round of the Palmetto Amateur, Josh Gallman of Gaffney, SC held a two-shot lead. But five bogeys on the front nine threw him back into the pack and turned the tournament into a free-for-all, with half-a-dozen golfers having a realistic chance to win. With two holes to play, it was Gallman and Scott Strohmeyer of Auburn, AL tied for the lead, with four others one shot behind. Ultimately it was Gallman's birdie on #17 that made the difference, giving him a one-shot win over Strohmeyer at 2-under-par 278.
Zach Sucher of Mobile, AL, the highest-ranked player in the field at #6 in the Golfweek/amateurgolf.com Player Rankings, made a run on the leaders with 4 birdies in the first 10 holes, but a late bogey took him out of the running and left him tied for 3rd at even-par 280.
Once again Palmetto Golf Club proved to be a great test, the classic Alister Mackenzie course proving once again that sheer length is not needed to challenge today's championship-caliber players.
