Palmer wins third Iowa Senior Amateur title

Joe Palmer etched his name into Iowa golf history yet again with his third senior amateur title

DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 22, 2018) – Joe Palmer now owns yet another Iowa Senior Amateur title. It’s his third in the last six years.

Palmer trailed by two shots entering the final round at Des Moines Golf & Country Club. He easily made that up with three birdies in his first six holes on Wednesday. Palmer added three more birdies on the back nine, but also had two bogeys. His final-round 68 helped get to 3 under for the tournament. He finished two shots ahead of Jon Brown.

Palmer has won his third Iowa Senior Match Play earlier this year. He qualified for the U.S. Senior Open in 2014.

As for Brown, who owns more than 10 Des Moines City titles, a final-round 2-under 70 was crucial in securing a runner-up finish. Chris Kramer of West Des Moines was third at even par and Matt Weresh, the first-round leader, was fourth at 1 over. Weresh opened with rounds of 73-70, but finished with 74 to lose ground on Palmer.

In the super senior division, Dave Sergeant won by two shots with his 2-over 218 total. Runner-up Jim Butler went 3 over in his final five holes to fall back to 4 over and leave Sergeant in the clear with the title.
