Olkowski will take lead into final round of Saguaro Amateur

Trevor Olkowski had a 5-under 67 on a chilly day in Arizona, but it was enough to jump to the top of the leaderboard

MARICOPA, Ariz. (Jan. 3, 2019) – Trevor Olkowski, a native of Grand Junction, Colo., shot a second-round 5-under 67 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club on another chilly day to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2019 Saguaro Amateur. Olkowski is a sophomore at the University of Colorado.

Olkowski rose to the lead on the strength of a back-nine 31 that included five birdies and no bogeys.

First-round co-leader Dan Starzinski, a Phoenix native who plays for the University of Wyoming, and Sean Carlon, a senior at the University of New Mexico, trail Olkowski by a single shot. They had a 71 and a 70, respectively, in the second round.

Temperatures reached a low of 26 degrees in Maricopa and the superintendent’s staff at Southern Dunes again battled heavy frost. Temperatures eventually warmed up into the mid 50s, and as a result 13 of the top 15 players on the leaderboard shot a round of par or better in Round 2.

The Troon Saguaro Amateur Series will commence with Friday’s final round, and Olkowski, Carlon, Trevor Lampson and Aaron Whalen will all be battling it out for the Series Championship. The final round will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time.
