Oklahoma leads by four after opening day of Carmel Cup

After one round at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Firday, Oklahoma is 11 under and has a four-shot lead.

Traditionally, some of the best programs in the country start their fall at the Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, Calif. After one round at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Firday, Oklahoma is 11 under and has a four-shot lead on Arkansas.

The Sooners counted a 7-under 65 from senior Garett Reband. That round included a front-nine 29 with six consecutive birdies from Nos. 2-7. He added one final birdie at No. 9, and also finished his day with birdies at Nos. 16 and 18.

Oklahoma also counted sub-70 rounds of 69 from freshmen Turner Hosch and Jake Holbrook. Quade Cummins, the reigning Pacific Coast Amateur winner, had 71.

"Great way to start the year," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Really fun to see both of our freshmen get their careers started out on the right foot. Garett (Reband) absolutely loves Pebble Beach and he had one of those special rounds today. The golf course played very tough coming down the stretch and our guys hung in there."

All told, Oklahoma was 11 under for the day, which was four better than Arkansas in second. Texas Tech, at 2 under, was the only other team in the red after the first round.

Reband’s 65 left him atop the individual leaderboard with a two-shot lead on Georgia’s Trent Phillips.
