Northeast Amateur: Horschel Sets Course Record

RUMFORD, R.I. – Billy Horschel can go low. He holds the USGA record for the lowest score in an event (60 during US Am stroke play qualifying at the Chaska Town Club last year) and today he posted the course record at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rhode Island. And these are fairways that have been walked by more than a few legendary players. Horschel, who was paired with first round leader Dustin Johnson, played the back nine of the course first and made the turn at 3-under par. The Grant, Fla., native proceeded to make four more birdies the rest of the way to finish with a 62. The score tied the competitive record at Wannamoisett that was established by Michael Harris in the 1998 Northeast Am. Johnson, who didn’t make a bogey on his way to a 64 in the first round, made a double bogey on his final hole (the 9th) and finished with an even-par 69. He is tied for third place with Adam Mitchell of the University of Georgia. Alone in second place at 6-under is Jarred Texter, a Pennsylvania native who has starred at UNLV. In fifth place five shots back are BYU All-American Daniel Summerhays (66-68) and California junior star Rickie Fowler who followed up a first round 65 with an even-par score of 69.
