VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (July 3, 2014) -- Red-hot USC star Rico Hoey shot a final-round 70 to take medalist honors at the 2014 North & South Amateur.
Hoey, who last week competed as a member of the U.S. squad at the Palmer Cup, shot 68-71-70 to take top honors and the No. 1 seed as match play begins Friday at the prestigious event.
First-round leader Will Seger of Indiana stormed back after a rough Round 2 to take the No. 2 seed, finishing at 65-76-70--211, two back of Hoey.
For many, the final day of the event's 54-hole stroke-play qualifier, was a race to finish inside the Top 16. For all, it was a race against the weather being brought Hurricane Arthur as it heads towards the region.
Georgia's Michael Cromie, Chris Hemmerich of Canada and overnight co-leader JD Dornes of Penn State slipped into a tie for third place while defending champion Andrew Dorn and Georgia Tech's Christopher Petefish tied for sixth place.
A group of six players snuck under the cut line with recent Monroe Invitational winner Taylor Pendrith of Kent State on the outside looking in.
