North & South Amateur: Cromie tops Conners for crown

Georgia's Michael Cromie used a pair of eagles in the championship match of the North & South Amateur to defeat Corey Conners

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (July 5, 2014) -- Georgia's Michael Cromie used a pair of eagles in the championship match of the North & South Amateur to defeat Corey Conners and win the 114th playing of the event. Cromie was a 4 and 3 winner over the Kent State star and recent Jones Cup champion in large part to the eagle-3 he recorded on the par-5 6th hole at Pinehurst No. 8 and the hole out for eagle-2 he had on the par-4 10th. The eagle on No. 10 put him 5-up and he'd close out the match on the 15th hole. It's the second victory at Pinehurst for Cromie, who became the first player to win both the North & South Junior and North & South Amateur championships. He won the junior title in 2007. Cromie reached the championship match with a 1-up win over Blair Hamilton in the morning semifinals. Conners, who reached the semifinals at last year's U.S. Amateur, toppled Harley Abrams 6 and 5 in the morning round.
