ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2014) -- Florida junior Sam Horsfield knows how to go low and he proved it again on Friday at St. Petersburg Country Club. Horsfield fired the tournament's low round and catapulted into the lead at the 2014 New Years Invitational.
Horsfield, who, this summer, made headlines with a deep run at the U.S. Junior following his record-setting win at the Florida State Amateur, followed his first-round 69 with a red-hot, 7-under 65. He leads Michael McGowan of by two shots entering the third round.
McGowan, who plays at UNC, shot 67 in Round 2.
Purdue's Phillipe Schweizer is third after rounds of 69-68.
First-round leader Blake Morris of Ole Miss fell back into a tie for fifth place. He followed his first-round 66 with a 74 on Friday.
Held every year since 1927, the New Year's Invitational is the region's oldest continuously-running invitational. Past winners include Peter Uihlein, Brandon Hagy, Jeff Overton and Brandt Snedeker.
A host of talented players remain in contention entering the third round, including: Purdue's Adam Schenk (67-74), Florida State's Jack Maguire (74-70) and defending champion Toni Hakula of Texas (73-72).
