WEST POINT, Miss. — Texas rising sophomore Taylor Funk, one of three sons of PGA Tour stars in the field, charged into a share of the lead Thursday with a 6-under 65 in the 109th Southern Amateur at Old Waverly Club.
Asked about his lofty position after 36 holes, the son of Fred Funk said: "Pretty special considering this is a big tournament with lots of world-ranked players and on a great course."
Robert Mize (Larry) survived the 36-hole cut, but Dru Love (Davis) did not.
After his bogey-free round, Funk is tied for the lead with Aussie Jarryd Felton, both at 7-under-par 135 totals. Josh Lee of Orange Park, Fla., and Tom Lovelady of Birmingham, Ala. are one stroke off the pace.
First round co-leaders Cooper Musselman and Joshua Munn fell off the top of the leaderboard, but are only two and three shots back, respectively. Musselman, who plays collegiately for the University of Kentucky, shot 71 on day two while Munn, a native New Zealander, posted 72.
Low Mississippians are Olive Branch's Braden Thornberry and Hattiesburg's David Riley, who chipped in from 99 feet just off his final green for an eagle 3 to make the 36-hole cut.
