NCAA East: Washington surges

Top-seeded Washington cut North Florida's lead in half Friday and trails by just two shots entering Saturday's final round

By Brentley Romine, Golfweek Top-seeded Washington cut North Florida's lead in half Friday and trails by just two shots entering Saturday's final round. The Huskies were led by Chris Williams and Cheng-Tsung Pan in the first round, as the pair had combined to shoot 9 under Thursday. But it was Charlie Hughes who stepped up for Washington on Friday. Hughes, a senior who has played in two NCAA Championships for the Huskies, shot the round of the day, carding a 7-under 65 to move into a tie for sixth. The bogey-free round included three birdies and an eagle. It was a much cleaner card than the one Hughes produced in the first round, when he shot 71 – that card included eight birdies but also three bogeys and two double bogeys. Pan added a second straight 67 to move into a tie for second. Add in Williams, who is T-13, and Washington has three golfers in the top 15 heading into the final round.
