Miss. State Coach Clay Homan wins Mississippi State Am

Homan not only puts his name on the trophy again, he sets the record for the lowest-ever tournament total at 17-under

Madison, Miss. (June 5, 2016) -- As the crowds gathered on the 18th green to witness history in the the most prestigious championship in Mississippi Amateur Golf, a familiar player approached. As the coach of the Mississippi State Men's golf team, he spends most of his time watching others play golf. But not today. Clay Homan's birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 gave him a commanding lead standing on the 18th tee at 17-under-par. Homan cooly made par at the last to break the longstanding record of 16-under for the 72-hole championship. On top of that, it was Homan's fifth Mississippi State Amateur title. Rounding out the final pairing was Cameron Clarke and Neil Trimm, who finished five behind Homan and tied for runner-up at 12-under. Clarke's fine play at the start of the championship was impressive for the 17-year-old, playing in only his second State Amateur. Neil Trimm continued to play well through the week and used his home course knowledge to his advantage.Clarke led the championship for the first two rounds and played strong in the third and final round to stay in contention. Clarke, a student at Bruce High School, was awarded the Mike Magee Medalist trophy for his first round of 64. That magical day was only one stroke shy of the Reunion Golf and Country Club course record in competition. No word on whether there was any recruiting going on between the high school junior and Mississippi State coach.
