Minnesota Four-Ball

Chris Baas and Phil Schmidt of Green Lea Golf Course (Albert Lea, Minn.) carded a closing round best-ball score of 65 (7-under par) to nail the 44th MGA Four-Ball Championship today at Medina Golf & Country Club, Medina, Minn. This is the second MGA Four-Ball Championship for Baas and Schmidt. In 2000, Schmidt canned a clutch 8-foot par putt for the win at Moorhead Country Club.

EDINA, MN (August 17, 2006) -- Finishing alone in second place was the uncle-nephew team of Robert and Taylor Cavanagh of Perham Lakeside Golf Club. The Cavanagh's posted a closing 66 to get to 10-under par for the championship (68-66-134). The elder Cavanagh is a former two-time MGA Four-Ball champion (1982, 1984), with his brother, Charlie Cavanagh. Tied for third place at 137 were three teams: Cory Blenkush of Baker National Golf Club and Trent Peterson of Valleywood Golf Course (68-69); Cory Jacobson and Troy Johnson of Rush Creek Golf Club (70-67); and Tuesday's first-round leaders J.B. Lloyd of Windsong Farm and Matt Yeager of Southview Country Club (68-69). The 7,229-yard par-72 Medina Golf & Country Club played slightly longer in Wednesday's final round, thanks to some moisture and a slight breeze, says Doug Hoffmann, MGA tournament director. Overall, a field of 318 players (70 teams Tuesday, 89 Wednesday) competed in two 18-hole qualifying rounds (Tues. and Weds.). Forty-five teams managed to make the cut for today's final 18-hole round. The format is stroke play; each player plays his own ball and the low score (best ball) is used for the team score. For complete results, click on the tournament link above.
