Michael Mercier overtakes Rick Woulfe for lead at Dixie Senior Amateur

Michael Mercier of June Beach, Fla. posted a 68 on Saturday at Heron Bay to overtake first-roiund leader Rick Woulfe

FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida (December 13, 2014) - - Rick Woulfe's torrid streak of golf came to and end on Saturday, but heck, he might be tired. That would be understandable after winning both the Crane Cup and Society of Seniors Ralph Bogart tournaments (the latter only finishing on Wednesday) and then going out and shooting 6-under in the first round of the Dixie. Who does he think he is, Jordan Spieth?

All kidding aside, Woulfe, a living legend of Florida amateur golf and lifetime member of AmateuGolf.com, hardly shot himself in the foot on Saturday, posting 1- over 73 to stand at 5-under and one shot back of new leader Michael Mercier. He will of course, be playing in the final group on Sunday.

And let's give Mercier some credit for going out and taking things into his own hands. The June Beach, Florida resident's 4-under 68 is one of the best in the tournament and by far the best on Sunday, when no other player broke 70. (5 players shot under 70 on Friday.) If Mercier can shave two strokes off of that as he did off his first round 70, he's going to be tough to beat on Sunday. Earlier this year, he tackled challenging conditions in finishing third at the British Senior Amateur.

Rounding out the final group at Heron Bay on Sunday is defending champ Doug Hanzel, the 2013 U.S. Senior champion who stands at 3-under after an even-par 72 on Saturday.

SUPER SENIOR
Stepen Rose and Craig Scott are tied for the Super-Senior lead at one-under 143 while John Baldwin is three back.
