Max Rottluff leads Arizona State to win at Arizona Intercollegiate

The Sun Devils captured an 11-shot win at their rival's tournament thanks to spectacular play from their German junior

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona State men's golf team kicked off the spring season with the Arizona Intercollegiate, hosted at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson by their rival University of Arizona Wildcats. They left Tucson on Tuesday afternoon with an 11-shot win to their name thanks to German junior Max Rottluff, who picked up his second win of the 2014-2015 season. Rottluff shot rounds of 70, 65, and 68 en route to the team's victory, with Rottluff taking individual honors by four strokes over Martin Simonsen of second-place finishing University of Texas-El Paso. “I’m very happy for the guys as they are seeing their hard work pay off,” Arizona State head coach Tim Mickelson told Golfweek. “Any team win is a great one, but to have everyone shoot under par in the final round is an awesome and rare thing.” The Sun Devils' team final-round total of seven-under 277 equaled the round they shot in Monday afternoon's second round, which allowed them to move into first place by two shots over Iowa State entering Tuesday's third and final round. Iowa State fell into a tie for fourth place, shooting eight-over on Tuesday. Robert Macintyre of McNeese State, Shotaro Ban of California, and Gavin Green of New Mexico shared third place at four-under par, with Macintyre firing the low round of the tournament — a 63 — on Tuesday to help his team finish in third place.
