Maryland Amateur: Rain delays match play

Kyle Gebhart and Jake Leavitt each shot 4-under-par 68 at the Country Club at Woodmore to share the qualifying medal

MITCHELLVILLE, Md. (June 7, 2013) -- Kyle Gebhart, from Ocean City Yacht & Country Club, and Jake Leavitt, Cattail Creek CC, each shot 4-under-par 68 at the Country Club at Woodmore to share the qualifying medal in the 92nd Maryland State Amateur championship, June 6. Billy Wingerd, from Mountain Branch GC, one of four former champions in the field, followed at 35-34--69. Defending champion Josh Eure, Crofton CC, is an automatic qualifier and will be joined by 31 players for match play beginning June 7. The 6,993-yard course in Mitchellville (Prince George's County) was played at a par of 36-36--72, and the only other ones in the 132-man field to better it were Joe Scheffres, Woodmont CC, with 35-36--71, and Jack MacDonald, Pine Ridge GC, 34-37--71. It took a 12-for-9 playoff at 75 to complete the draw. Gebhart, 22, a Salisbury University senior, had played high school golf but had had limited tournament experience until recently. The first-time entrant in the event birdied four of five holes in the middle of his round and finished 34-34--68. Leavitt started on No. 10, birdied 12 to get to the turn in 35, then posted three birdies on the front for 33. Wingerd, 30, had four birdies and a three-putt in his round. Scheffres was 4 under par through 16 holes, but slipped back with a bogey, double-bogey finish. MacDonald was 1-over par for 12 holes, then rallied with three birdies down the stretch. Two rounds each day, June 7-8, will reduce the field to two finalists for a scheduled 36-hole final June 9.
