Local boy Fields wins North and South Amateur

Jack Fields came back from 3 down in the first nine holes to win the North and South Amateur 36-hole championship match over David Erdy

PINEHURST, NC (July 2, 2011) -- Local golfer Jack Fields came back from 3 down in the first nine holes of Saturday's 36-hole championship match to overtake David Erdy, of Indiana University, 5 and 4. Fields is the first local golfer to win the prestigious amateur championship since Kelly Mitchum brought home the trophy in 1993. “It would be a great honor to win this championship. A lot of people would be proud and happy for me, so I am going to go out giving it my best and hope I can get it done for the home crowd,” Fields said earlier this week. Fields never went down in the match during the final 18 holes. Consecutive birdies on holes No' 25 and 26 put the former Tar Heel golfer 3 up with just 10 holes to play. It was a deficit that the 24th seed Erdy could not make up.
