Kilgo shot a bogey-free 63 in Round 1 and followed that performance with another bogey-free round of 69 on Saturday.
Thomas Owen of Fayetteville, N.C., made up the most ground on the leader in Round 2 by tying for the low round of day two with a 5-under 67. Owen goes into the final round tied for second place and will play in the final pairing with Kilgo and the 2014 North Carolina Mid-Am Champion Joe Jaspers of Huntersville, N.C.
"I played well and got a couple putts to fall outside of 15 feet today," Owen said after his round. "I think I haven't three-putted this tournament and I've just been trying to get the pace right. If it falls, it falls. If it doesn't, just tap it in and move on. I'm just trying to keep the pressure off the putter."
Owen said that he was able to feed off of his playing partners Saturday and the group had a "really good energy."
Sunday's round may not be as friendly but there should be plenty of birdies to be had. After Saturday's round, the cut is set and pairings will now be based on scoring.
When asked how different the round will be tomorrow knowing that he will be paired with his two closest competitors, Kilgo welcomed the challenge.
"I actually prefer that," Kilgo said. "Watching good golf shots is contagious and I know Joe Jaspers pretty well...I look forward to the challenge. I'm sure there will be a lot of good golf shots hit tomorrow and I'm sure it will be a battle."
Jaspers, who sat alone in second place after Round 1, shot a solid 2-under 70 in Round 2. He is now tied for second place with Owen at 9 under, three shots off the pace.
