Justin Suh wins San Francisco City

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (April 12, 2015) — Justin Suh defeated fellow Santa Teresa Junior Golf Club member Thomas Hutchison, 9-and-8 today in the San Francisco City Championship final at TPC Harding Park Golf Course. Suh took a six-up lead into the second 18, getting that started on a good note with a birdie on the first hole to go seven-up through 19. Both Suh and Hutchison are taught by the same local teaching professional, Terry Sullivan of Santa Teresa Golf Club. “It’s definitely been a goal of mine,” Suh told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I see myself getting better. I don’t want to jinx it, but I definitely feel like if I just start improving and get better in college, I can definitely have a chance.” Suh, who plays for Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose, is the reigning NCGA Junior champion and has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Southern California. WOMEN'S BRACKET Former UC Irvine golfer Sara Banke of Danville defeated high-schooler Anna Zhou of Palo Alto by a margin of 6&4. Banke, the reigning California State Women's Amateur champion, knocked off 12-year-old phenom Lucy Li on Saturday with a narrow one-up victory. Somehow we get the feeling that Li -- who has already played three USGA events including last year's U.S. Open at Pinehurst — will get another crack at the SF City title. Banke's father Dana is the head golf professional at Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo, and was out on Sunday with family supporting her daughter's big win. “This is a really big deal because my dad played in this tournament,” Sara Banke told the Chronicle. “I was really nervous, but I was really excited.” Full Women's Bracket SENIOR BRACKET Gary Vanier continued to build on his legacy as one of the most decorated golfers in San Francisco City Championship history with a win over defending champ Jim Williams, 4&2. Vanier first won the Men's Championship title in 1971. He waited 14 years for his next title, but after winning in 1985 backed it up with another in 1986 before adding titles in 1988, 1992, and 1994 (that's six). This is the third Senior title for the Olympic Club member. Williams was a formidable opponent, having won two of the last three senior titles. His game should be in fine form for the U.S. Four Ball at Olympic Club just three weeks from now. He qualified with his son, Scott. Full Senior and Super Senior Brackets In the Super Senior bracket, Joe Rogers defeated Herb Jensen 4-and-3. Jensen, the No. 1 seed, reached the finals with a one-up win over Vic Shellenberg while Rogers won by default when his semifinal matchup Michael Mahoney had to withdraw.
