Horsfield's 63 Propels Florida into Lead at SunTrust Gator Invitational

University of Florida freshman Sam Horsfield opens 63, 68 to give the Gators a one shot lead over South Florida

Gainesville, Fla. -- Florida's premiere college golf programs battled it out for 36 holes on day one of the SunTrust Gator Invitational hosted by the Mark Bostick Golf Course. University of Florida freshman Sam Horsfield opened the day with a bogey-free 63, just one shy of the tournament record. He then opened his 2nd round with three consecutive birdies to be an incredible 10-under par after 21 holes. “I got off to a good start in both rounds," Horsfield told Florida Athletics. "It was a really cool environment and tomorrow I'm going to hopefully play my game and see what happens." Florida Coach JC Deacon added, "When the lights come on, Sammie is unbelievable, and he really gets it going, and he did that again today". Horsfield finished the day at 9-under par and tops the individual leaderboard by two shots over South Florida's Rigel Fernandes who also fired a 63, his coming in the 2nd round. The Gators lead the way in the team competition at 10-under par after rounds of 272 (8-under) and 278 (2-under) on the par 70 layout. South Florida and Jacksonville are within striking distance just one and two shots back heading into the final round.
