Hallberg shoots 64 to lead by one at Colorado Stroke Play

LAKEWOOD, Co. (August 8, 2014) — Eric Hallberg shot the low round of the tournament so far, a 6-under-par 64 on Friday, to take the lead at the halfway point of the Colorado Stroke Play Championship at Lakewood Country Club. Hallberg, the 20-year-old son of Champions Tour player Gary Hallberg, posted seven birdies on Friday — including four from holes 11-15 — offset by a bogey on No. 16. That leaves the 2012 U.S. Amateur qualifier at 5-under-par 135 overall. Sitting a stroke behind Hallberg are David Oraee and Nick Nosewicz. Oraee, a University of Colorado golfer and the 2013 Colorado Match Play champion, has carded consecutive rounds of 68, while Nosewicz has gone 67-69. Colorado State University golfer Jimmy Makloski vaulted up the scoreboard Friday with a 65 that included an eagle. He shares fourth place at 137 with first round co-leader Chris Korte and Braden Baer. All told, 11 players reached the halfway point of the championship under par. Among them is Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club, who like Hallberg is the son of a Champions Tour player, in his case three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin. The 41 golfers who stand at 7-over 147 or better survived the 36-hole cut and will play on the weekend. The 72-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday.
