CADIZ, Spain (March 8, 2010) -- Matthew Haines of England won the Spanish International Amateur today, defeating his compatriot Tommy Fleetwood with a birdie on the first hole of sudden-death after their scheduled 36-hole final ended in a tie.
The vibrant end put the finishing touch to a tournament in which the bad weather did not spoil the spirits of the mainly European playing field. Haines -- the qualifying Medalist at 4-under par -- dominated much of the match, finishing the first 18 holes 2-up on Fleetwood. Fleetwood made a strong comeback in the afternoon, winning two of the first three holes with birdies to square the match. Although he never gained the lead on Haines, Fleetwood won the 35th hole to square the match after Haines took the lead with a birdie on the hole prior.
Weather was a major factor during the match play portion of the event, causing several delays and postponing quarterfinal and semifinal play. This resulted in the final match being played Monday instead of Sunday. Seven Spanish players qualified for match play.
