Georgia rolls to victory at Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — The Georgia Bulldogs went wire-to-wire at the Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue University, beating second-place finishing, and rival, Georgia Tech by seven shots for their first win of the spring. Their win was their first since the team's season-opening win back in September at the Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach. "Chemistry is critical in team golf and we're really seeing that with the five guys," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "Their confidence in themselves and each other is up, especially now that they've won twice together." The team was pushed to victory by juniors Lee McCoy of Clarkesville, Ga. and Sepp Straka of Valdosta, Ga. Both players finished in a tie for fourth place individually at five-under par 211. They led the medalist race entering Tuesday's final round but lost by two to Alabama's Dru Love and Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent. Love, whose Crimson Tide team finished in a tie for third with Oklahoma, closed with a 69 while Vincent, of Zimbabwe, shot 68 on day three. The pair, who both had bogey-free final rounds, shared medalist honors at Rio Mar Country Club. Georgia Tech took second place, seven shots back of their in-state rival. Ollie Schniederjans and Anders Albertson led the Yellow Jackets at two-under 214, which placed them in a tie for eleventh.
