George C. Thomas: Scott Harvey Three-peats at LACC

Not letting go: Scott Harvey's final round 66 helps him keep his trophy while Gene Elliott shoots 3-under to top the Seniors

LOS ANGELES, California (June 23, 2018) -- Scott Harvey has a game that travels well to most courses. The 2014 U.S. Mid-Am champion (and 2015 USA Walker Cup team member) was part of an early leaderboard in round one, where he shot 69. But a tough second round of 78 (in fairness all the scores were higher on a more difficult scoring day) put him in danger of not defending his title. Trailing a trio of players by a full 4 shots, Harvey needed his best to pull out his third-straight George C. Thomas title. A 66 did the trick, vaulting Harvey to a three shot victory. No doubt, he'll return to Los Angeles CC next year to try and make it four. Skip Berkmeyer (Town & Country, MO) and Aaron Hickman (Tyler, X) finished tied for second. Berkmeyer, the veteran Midwestern Mid-Am, matched Harvey's 66 and passed everyone in front of him except for Mr. Harvey. SENIOR DIVISION Gene Elliott (West Des Moines, IA), grabbed the lead early on Thursday and never let it go. He won his first George C. Thomas Senior Championship, posting 3-under 209 -- 5-strokes ahead of runner-up John Pate (Santa Barbara, CA). Grady Brame posted the low senior score of the day, a 2-under 68.
