CARMICHAEL, Calif. (May 25, 2009) -- There was a golfer on a skateboard, 30-handicappers rattling around the trees screeching "Fore!" and 5-year-olds doing somersaults in the fairway.
What there wasn't Monday at Ancil Hoffman during the final round of the Memorial Amateur Championship was on-course leaderboards. Amateur tournament. Public course. So when overnight leader Derek Ernst bogeyed the 18th hole from a greenside bunker to complete a final round of 2-over-par 72, he assumed his day was done, and not with a happy ending.
"When I made the turn, I saw that someone was 4 under," Ernst said. "I figured there was no way the winning score would be any worse."
Wrong. Ernst's three-day total of 3-under 207 tied him at the top with Folsom's Kevin Lucas, who shot a 64 to rally from 16th, eight shots off the lead. Ernst was determined not to waste his reprieve. (click here for full story from sacbee.com)
