English Am: Firth, Wilson, Dimayuga go low on Day 2

A total of 72 golfers qualified for the match-play stage at 3 over or better, and the preliminary matches begin Thursday.

The low rounds of the day at the English Amateur went to Ben Firth, James Wilson and Enrique Dimayuga, all of whom safely qualified for match play at Hankley Common in Farnam, England.

Firth, carded a 6-under 64 in his second qualifying round at North Hants to qualify in second place alongside Walton Heath’s Harvey Byers, who finished at 5-under 136. Dimayuga recovered from an opening 76 at Hankley Common to match Firth’s score at North Hants and make it through in 19th.

Wilson had opened with a 2-over 72 at North Hants but moved up to a share of fourth place with Alex Fitzpatrick, who plays for Wake Forest, at 4-under 137 after firing a 6-under 65 at Hankley Common.

After two rounds of stroke play, the No. 1 seed in the match play went to Jake Bolton, who was 6 under for two rounds.

On a day of low scoring, John Gough, Tom Plumb, Jake Burnage and Harry Goddard all went under par to finish at 3 under. There was a large group another shot back at 2 under.

A total of 72 golfers qualified for the match-play stage at 3 over or better, meaning there will be a preliminary round in the morning to determine the top 64 who will start in the first round proper. One player who missed out was defending champion Tom Thurloway, who carded a 70 at North Hants to add to his opening 78 at Hankley Common, leaving him four shots outside the cut.
