Eight players remain at Spanish International Amateur

Gary Hurley of Ireland knocked out No. 1 seed Viktor Hovland in the round of 16 on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals

CADIZ, Spain — The final eight players are set for the quarterfinals at the Spanish International Amateur, set to begin Saturday morning at Jerez Golf Club on the southwest coast of Spain. On Thursday in the round of 16, Gary Hurley of Ireland knocked off No. 1 seed Viktor Hovland of Norway with a 4-and-3 defeat. He'll face Markus Maukner of Austria in Friday morning's quarterfinal match. Hurley defeated the only American in the tournament, Jim Liu of New York, 6-and-5 in Thursday morning's round. An all United Kingdom matchup between Ashley Chesters and Jack Hume will take place Friday morning as Chesters, of England, will square off with Hume, of Wales to face the winner of Hurley/Maukner. The lone Spaniard remaining, Ivan Cantero, is pinned up against Englishman Sean Towndrow, while the final pairing includes Jeroen Krietemeijer of the Netherlands and Ashton Turner of England. In stroke play qualifying for match play, four players tied at four-under par 140 and shared medalist honors. Of the group, only Cantero of Spain remains as Hovland, along with Michael Sanders and Jonathan Thomson were defeated on Thursday. Recent Sotogrande Cup Individual winner Mario Galiano of Spain just missed qualifying for match play at 78-71 while defending champion Daniel Berna also missed, shooting 80-76.
