East of Ireland Open: Dunne survives surge

Paul Dunne survived a nervous back nine to hold off Headfort’s Brian Casey and win the East of Ireland Amateur Open

BALTRAY, Ireland (June 3, 2013) -- Greystones’ Paul Dunne survived a nervous back nine to hold off Headfort’s Brian Casey and win the East of Ireland Amateur Open by a shot at Baltray. Four shots clear of Casey overnight, the 20-year old University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) student saw his lead reduced to two strokes over the Meath man with a round to go, surged four clear with two holes to play but then double bogeyed the 17th to set up a thrilling finish on the par-five 18th. A Casey birdie was not enough, however, as Dunne two-putted from 35 feet for his par five and a 73 to the Headfort man’s 72 for a one-stroke win on six under par 282.
