VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (Dec. 28, 2008) -- In the 60th annual playing of the prestigious Donald Ross Junior Championship, a pair of local North Carolina golfers took home the title in their age divisions, while Chattanooga's Keith Mitchell won the 15-17 title.
Playing on course No's 5 and 4, in that order, Mitchell opened with a 3-under-par 69 in round 1, then held steady with an even-par 72 in round 2 to hold off Austin Cody and Charlie Killian by a stroke.
Cody, a South Carolina native, finished at 2-under 142 after firing a pair of 71's, while North Carolina's Killian went 72-70.
Bryce Chalkley, Clark Palmer and Sam Straka were also in the red at 1-under, while Logan Harrell finished at even par.
In the 12-14 division, Victor Wiggins of Gastonia, N.C., fired a pair of 68's to finish at 4-under 136 and win the flight by three strokes.
Jackson Moore of South Carolina and Adam Ball of Virginia tied for runner-up honors at 1-under 139.
In the 11-and-under flight, Raleigh's Eric Bae went 75-73--148, 2-over-par. He was trailed by Jonathan Rector at 151.
Both the U-11 and 12-14 age divisions were played on Course No. 1, a Donald Ross design, with the youngsters playing to 5,297 yards and the older group at 5,857.
