BATON ROUGE, LA (June 11, 2017) - Derek Busby shot a final-round 66 to pull away from the field and win the 98th Louisiana Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Louisiana.
Busby, 33, is a reinstated amateur and member at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant. He finished in the final 16 of last year's U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Stonewall Links in Elverson, PA, and earlier this spring he finished tied for third at the Carlton Woods Invitational in Houston.
Busby started the day one shot ahead of 18-year-old Trey Winstead of Baton Rouge after posting a third-round 67, the low round of the day.
The lead grew to three after Busby shot a two-under 33 on the front nine, and then he put it out of reach by going birdie-eagle-birdie on ten through twelve. In the end, it was a five-under 66, once again the low round of the day, for a 12-under 272 total and a four shot win.
Winstead, who will be playing college golf for LSU starting in the fall, closed with a 69 to finish alone in second at 8-under 276.
Jacob Bergeron of Slidell was the only other player under par, at five-under 279. Nicholas Arcement of Thibodaux was fourth at even par 284, and James Anstiss, who won last year at Carter Plantation, finished alone in fifth at two-over 286.
