OOLTEWAH, Tenn. — Denver Haddix of Lexington, Ky. was the only player under par after the first round of play at the John T. Lupton Invitational. He leads the tournament at the always-tough Honors Course by two strokes with a first-round 70.
Haddix, who won the 2014 Kentucky Match Play title, reached the quarterfinals in last year's U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Craig Smith, who finished runner-up at the 2014 Birmingham National Invitational, is in second place at even-par 72. In third is 2014 Timuquana Cup winner Charles Waddell of Chicago at 74, followed by Andrew Lawson and Colby Harwell who are tied for fourth at 75.
Defending champion Mike McCoy is not in the field this year.
In the Senior division, Allen Barber's stableford total of 35 leads by one over Michael Mercier and Neil Spitalny. And in the Super Senior division, Bob Kain's total of 34 paces the field by one over Larry Clark.
