David Pastore captures Metropolitan Amateur

LOCUST VALLEY, N.Y. (August 3, 2014) — Sunday was an exciting and rainy day for David Pastore. He had reached the Metropolitan Amateur final and had a chance to become the first player since current PGA TOUR member Johnson Wagner to win both the "Ike" Championship and the Amateur Championship in the same year, who accomplished the feat in 2002. On the 35th hole, a par-three, Pastore held a two-up lead, so a simple push of the hole would've given him victory. But the former University of Virginia golfer holed his tee shot, winning in the most dramatic of fashions. Runner-up Matt Lowe hit first on the par-three, knocking it to a few feet before Pastore topped him with an ace. “Matt is a great iron player and on the tee before I hit, I knew I would give him a two, and I knew I just wanted to hit it up there close and make my putt,” Pastore told the Metropolitan Golf Association. No putt was needed for the Farmingdale, N.Y. native. Both Pastore and Lowe are alternates for this month's U.S. Amateur at Atlanta Athletic club.
