Colton Yates leads after day one at Eastern Amateur

Colton Yates opens Eastern Amateur with five straight birdies for a first round 64 and a two-shot lead

Portsmouth, Va. (July 9, 2015) – The Eastern Amateur began its 59th running Thursday at the Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club in Portsmouth, Va. Leading the way with an opening round of 6-under 64 is Colton Yates, a freshman at Colorado State University. Yates opened his round lights out, making birdies on his first five holes to turn in 5-under 30. He tacked on three more birdies on the backside along with two bogeys to finish with a 34. Trailing Yates by two shots are Drexel University’s Christopher Crawford, University of Auburn commit Jacob Solomon, local qualifier Chase Duffy, Elon University golfer Jake Leavitt, and Old Dominion University golfer Robbie Bradshaw. Crawford’s 66 was nearly flawless, tallying five birdies (four on his back-nine) a lone bogey. Having finished in a tie for 3rd last year, Crawford is certainly a player to look out for throughout the remainder of the tournament. Players will tee off early tomorrow morning for their second round with a champion to be crowned after 72 holes on Monday.
