College of Charleston Leads Schenkel Invitational

Currently the individual race is being led by Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong after he shot a flawless 6-under 66 in the first round

STATESBORO, GA (March 17, 2017) -- The College of Charleston men's golf team carded a 9-under par 279 to lead the Schenkel Invitational by one stroke after the first day of play at the par-72 Forest Heights Country Club.

The Cougars got rounds of 68, 69, 70 and 72 from their top four counting players to position themselves ahead of host Georgia Southern (-8) after 18 holes.

Iowa and Lipscomb are tied for third at 7-under par. No. 2 Florida is fifth (-6) and defending champion Vanderbilt is tied for sixth with UAB (-5).

College of Charleston senior All-American William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) shot 4-under and is tied for fourth individually followed by senior Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.) tied for ninth (-3), freshman Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) tied for 16th (-2) and freshman Christian Baliker (Simpsonville, S.C.) tied for 29th (E).

"I was very happy with the round of golf we played today," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We had great rounds from William (Rainey) and Parker (Derby). Hunter (Dunagan) and Christian (Baliker) did what we needed them to do. We look forward to the next few days and want to keep the pedal down."

Currently the individual race is being led by Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong. On Friday Armstrong turned in a bogey-free 6-under 66 to take a one shot lead. Armstrong began his round on the 10th hole and finished with four birdies in his final five holes.

Raymond Knoll (Iowa) and Brett Barron (Georgia Southern) are tied for second at 5-under while five others are tied for fourth at 4-under.
