MURRIETA, CA (June 2, 2005) -- San Diego's St. Augustine High School and senior Brett Kanda of Flintridge Prep (La Canada) captured the team and individual titles, respectively, today in the 35th CIF-SCGA High School Southern Regional Championship at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. Brett Kanda of Flintridge Prep won the individual title in the CIF-SCGA High School Boys Southern Regional at The SCGA Golf Course.. St. Augustine, which earlier had won the CIF San Diego section title, continued its strong play as five of its six players posted 1-over-par 73 or better. With the best five of six scores counting for the team total, St. Augustine's 358 was four shots better than its neighbor, University of San Diego High School. Murrieta Valley, which was playing on its home course, finished in third at 366. Kanda finished with a 6-under-par 66, a shot in front of Cameron Trinagle of Mission Viejo, to capture the individual crown. Kanda, who has hit 50 of his last 54 greens in regulation over the past three tournaments, had eight birdies and two bogies on his card today. Five golfers tied for third place with 4-under-par 68s, including defending champion Rickie Fowler of Murrieta Valley. The top three teams and the top six individuals not from those teams advance to the state championship June 8 at Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach. Everyone who shot 68 or better advanced. Kanda's trip to victory had its moments of adventure. He shanked his tee shot on the par-three 16th hole, but got up and down for par. On the par-3 sixth hole, he hit the flagstick on one bounce with his tee shot and made the birdie putt. Click on the tournament link above for complete results (amateurgolf.com membership required).
