Cal's Tilly tops San Francisco City qualifying; field set

Finigan Tilly was the only player to remain under par for two rounds as stroke-play qualifying wrapped up

The field is set for the beginning of the San Francisco City Amateur. After two days of qualifying split between TPC Harding Park and Lincoln Park Golf Course, the 64-player cut fell at 14 over.

At the top of the scoreboard, Finigan Tilly led all qualifiers with a 3-under total. Tilly, a junior on the University of California men's golf team, had a 2-under 70 at TPC Harding Park on Saturday, then came back with a 1-under 67 at Lincoln Park on Sunday. Tilly birdied his final hole both days.

Tilly won the Bayonet Black Horse Amateur in 2017, and also was stroke-play medalist at NCGA Match Play that year.

Rajvir Bedi, in second place at even par, played the courses in the opposite order. He was 1 over at Lincoln Park on Saturday but rebounded with a 1-under 71 at Harding Park.

Domingo Jojola was solo third with a 1-over total. He had a 66 on Lincoln Park on Sunday that was unmatched by the rest of the field. Jojola returns to the San Francisco City Championship after falling in the Round of 32 each of the past two years.

Two players tied for fourth at 2 over, including Ned Jensen, a semifinalist at this event in 2017. Jensen fell in the Round of 16 last year, but he was runner-up at NCGA Match Play later in the summer. Jake Yount was also at 2 over with Jensen.

Two more notable players who advanced include Brett Viboch and Bobby Bucey, who finished T-9 (5 over) and T-12 (6 over), respectively. The two teamed up to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball last year, and were stroke-play medalists. They also won the NCGA Four-Ball title in 2016.

Viboch reached the quarterfinals of the San Francisco City Amateur in 2018, and Bucey, the reigning California Amateur champion, reached the Round of 32.

Jason Anthony, a 35-year-old who plays out of Olympic Club, did not have to qualify in thanks to his status as defending champion. He will automatically take the No. 2 seed on the bracket.

A six-for-four playoff went off at the end of the day, and after four extra holes at Harding Park -- Nos. 16, 17, 18 and 1 -- Alexander Barclay, John Jones, George McNeely and Gary Knight advanced.

The San Francisco City Championship continues next weekend, with three rounds of match play scheduled, which will pare the field down to the final 16.
